Chapter One

“I will not hear any more of these arguments. You know that I am the one that holds the clans together. If I decide this is right for the Maclaren clan, then you have no right to speak against it. Don’t look at me like that and I don’t want to see you roll your eyes in defiance. You have a duty to your family and I expect you to follow through. I feel that there is dissension and rumors that some of the clans are not very happy about the direction that I’m taking them. This will show them that I am serious. To give my blessing to this union will give them that feeling of unity.” I really didn’t want to hear this. I always thought that I was destined to become a queen, but apparently my father had ideas that did not exactly match with my agenda.

“I don’t like this, father and I’m doing this under protest.” I felt like I had a right to rebel and my father had always told me that I was destined to rule these clans with an iron fist. I wanted to do it with a little bit more compassion, but apparently he thought that the way that I could rule was with a man by my side. “You should’ve told me about this long before now. Give me a moment and I’ll be ready to go to my new life. Don’t expect me to be happy about this, because I’m not.” I stormed off, feeling his eyes on me, watching my every move and most likely worried that I was going to try something.

“Mary, if it helps, I’m not exactly thrilled that I have to do this. It has become painfully clear that somebody is thinking about making a stand. Hopefully, unifying our clans in this way will make them see that we are a force to be reckoned with. I will send one of my finest highland warriors with you. They will stay by your side, until you are presented to Conner Patrick. My fervent hope is that you will find love in his arms. Between the both of you, you can make a concentrated effort to become what these people need the most. Conner will try to usurp your authority, but I want you to remind him of your ruling class. Never let him forget that he was deemed worthy enough to become part of this family and not the other way around.” I was climbing the stairs with my dress in my hands.

“Father, I may not agree with your methods, but I can’t deny the results. This union will unite the clan factions and give them structure. They will know that leadership is being given on two fronts.” My mother was dead and my father had to become both my teacher and give me the compassion that I needed. He showed me how to be strong and forceful, but also to show kindness in the face of adversity.
